BLAST FROM THE PAST: FASHION EDITION

As trends come and go, I’m noticing that a lot of the pieces I loved in childhood and young adulthood are coming back! Trends tend to come and go, but I do think a lot of these pieces are timeless in one way or another. Plus, I’m seeing a lot more color come back to everyone’s wardrobe after neutrals were the style for a few years. And you know me… I LOVE playing with color, pattern, and texture in my closet.

So without further ado, here are some of my favorite fashion trends that are back in style this season! And if you hadn’t already guessed, I am so stoked about every single one.

Midi/Maxi skirts

Mini skirts have been shining in recent years, but midi and maxi skirts are back with a passion! I remember seeing these when I was younger — the ones with a bit of lace trim or a ruffle along the hem — and loving how versatile they were. Day at school? Mini skirt. Church event? Maxi skirt. Wherever you’re going today, I think that’s still true. Dressing them up is simple and easy when you add a nice blouse, or you can throw on a jean jacket for a more relaxed look. And for any of my other petite friends out there, I always thought this would be a style that wasn’t for me, but there are so many that work well with my height I’ve found! Here are some of my faves that I’ve been eyeing!

Platform flip flops

I have been living out my own Lizzy McGuire movie dreams with these platform flip flops, and I can’t get over how cute they are! They were a little hard to style at first because I couldn’t figure out how they fit with my current style, but as soon as I started playing around with what’s in my closet, I realized what a perfect summer sandal they are. They’re colorful, a little funky, and they bring that nostalgic energy to any outfit.

fancy cami

Remember the days of stacking all those tank tops on top of each other to achieve that perfectly layered look? Well, I don’t think it was perfect, but it was certainly a look! Now it seems like the fancy camis are coming back. You know, the ones that have lace edges and thin straps? Now that I have more variety in my wardrobe, I think I can make these a little more chic. Might make for a super cute date night outfit!

jellies

OK, virtual show of hands. Who had jellies as a kid?? They were kind of the perfect childhood shoe. A little bit of sparkle and color and they were easy to wash when kid-life made everything a bit dirty. I don’t think I ever grew out of loving jellies for those reasons, and as an adult, convenience always means a little more than it did as a kid. So now I love tossing on my pair of jellies, especially for days at the beach or the lake!

Popcorn/Bubble Top

OK these are ALL THE RAGE right now, and I am here for it! They are such a fun statement piece, and they really have that retro-inspired vibe. I know they’re not for everyone, but if you’re even a little bit curious, I would try out a bubble top and just see what you think. You may be surprised how much you love it, and it really is so easy to pair with anything you own. Skirts, shorts, jeans, sandals, heels… You name it!

oversized bags

Mini bags were in for a while, and while I love a super cute mini bag, I’m psyched that oversized bags are taking the fashion world by storm right now. Mini bags are definitely cute, but you really can’t beat all the space that comes with an oversized bag! No more stuffing my lipstick and cards into that tiny main compartment; now I can cart around everything I want! Plus, I think oversized bags bring a new level of accessorizing to casual outfits. I’ve seen so many cute tote bags and even travel bags that take those leisurely ‘fits up a notch.
