MY TOP 3 STREAMING TIPS
OK, I know starting anything can be intimidating, but if streaming is one of those things you’re hoping to do in 2024, this is your sign to go for it! Cooper and I really love it and have found a great community of people who really encourage us to be ourselves and do what we love. But if you’re not sure where to begin, this blog is for you.
Here are my TOP 3 tips for streaming!
Find a niche…or don’t
Even outside of streaming, everyone is always saying to stick with one thing. If you have one game you really love, then make that the focus! Find people within that gaming community around your size to raid and interact with. But if you are like Cooper and I, maybe there are a lot of things you enjoy and want to share and you can be a variety streamer. I think there are two sides to this.
Being niche helps you grow faster I think, but being a variety streamer makes people aware in your community that they can expect all sorts of things from you. Which, sometimes people only enjoy one type of content but not others from you, and that’s to be expected. In other words, don’t let that discourage you.
In my opinion, variety still works if you still have some key identifiers. For example, with MeganAndCooper, I think the things that define our stream are music, couple streamer, nostalgic throwback games, indie co-ops… Oh, and a personal favorite of mine: “The Backseat Gamer” where I play one of Cooper’s favorite games for the first time. So niche or not, you decide what feels most like you! And make it something that YOU enjoy.
Share Everywhere
Growing organically on a platform can be difficult, and discoverability can be hard on a platform like Twitch. We have grown our most on Twitch through the kindness of raids from other streamers and their communities and even more by sharing our content on other platforms. It can be overwhelming when it feels like doing one thing isn’t enough. But sharing short-form content that’s a snippet of what people can experience at one of your live streams truly is one of the best ways to grow!
Start small. 1-2 TikToks/Shorts/Reels etc. Then maybe down the road you can add an editor to you team to help with sharing more. Also, take advantage of going live on multiple platforms as well! We have found that discoverability can be really good on a platform like TikTok. We have also found the growth and viewership on TikTok can be more fickle if your audience isn’t immediately engaged, so maybe consider going live on there when you know it will be a moment that captures people’s attention before scrolling away.
Just Go Live!
As simple as it sounds, if streaming is something you’ve wanted to do, go for it! There’s no need to wait for everything to be perfect. You don’t need the best of the best to make a great stream. As long as you have clear audio and webcam to get you started, you can continue to grow and add more to improve your streams as you go along. There are a lot of good USB microphone options and you can even find used webcams in great condition. You don’t have to spend a lot to get started!
