SUMMER TO FALL OUTFIT IDEAS

As summer comes to a close, I’ve been trying to evaluate my closet and my recent shopping choices to see which pieces will transition well to fall. I really do love skirts and dresses, and I always want to find ways to make them as fall-friendly as I can! Accessorizing is another element of your wardrobe that will help your pieces become more suitable for colder weather, but today we’re going to be exclusively looking at some pieces that I’ve been thinking can work for warm, cool, and cold weather.

Dresses

Dresses are a great transitional piece to have in your closet because you can layer, layer, layer. Tights, high socks, booties, cardigans, scarves… The possibilities are truly endless! I pulled some long and short dresses because I find myself wearing both as the weather cools down. For some of the sleeveless dresses, I imagine wearing a chunky cardigan with it or a cute long sleeve shirt/turtleneck underneath. Boots tend to be super cute with both shorter and longer dresses, and shoes can definitely turn an outfit from summer to fall.

Tops

My main mission when I’m transitioning my closet to fall is to use even the things that might not feel appropriate for fall. The baby tee I pulled here is a great example. A few years ago I might not have pulled that out of my closet for a cooler day, but it’s actually the perfect piece for layering. You can put on a long sleeve shirt underneath, pull on the baby tee, wrap yourself in a scarf, and then pick your fave jacket to complete the look. Tops are always easier to layer than bottoms, and having versatile pieces in your wardrobe will make for a more sustainable closet year-round.

Bottoms

Bottoms, whether you choose pants, shorts, or even a skirt, can be tricky sometimes based on the weather. If it’s too cold, your bare legs might end up a tad chilly. If you’re wearing pants on a warm day, you might end up regretting it halfway through. BUT, the beautiful thing about all three options is that they allow you that flexibility as the weather shifts and changes in the coming months. If you’re a fan of skirts/shorts, tights and cute socks will be your best friends as the weather dips into lower temps. If you’re ready to fully get back into your jeans/pants, you can always cool the outfit down with a cute tank or tee. Either way, don’t be afraid to use every piece in your closet to make the outfit work for you.

Jackets

Jackets definitely become more useful in the fall, but here in Nashville, if a jacket is too heavy then I’ll definitely be sweating on those warmer days. I tried to pull pieces here with some summer and fall colors and pieces for varying levels of cool weather. I feel like jackets often complete an outfit, so even on the warmer nights, I like to have some sort of outerwear.

Accessories

With accessories, you have so many options, and I even had a difficult time choosing my favorites for this post. You can go for a maximalist vibe and pull together an outfit with a ton of accessories if that’s what makes your heart happy, or you can take a minimalist approach and stick with one or two at a time. Whatever you choose, I like the options below because they are colorful and fun but they can be added to TON of different outfits. I especially love those Dr. Martens because you can wear them with a skirt and cute socks in the summer, and they can keep your toes warm in the fall!
