LOOKING FOR SOME SUNSHINE

My New Song sunshine

Almost two years ago I made the move from California to Tennessee! Although I’ve loved that decision, some consecutive gloomy days led to me writing “Sunshine.” I went in to collaborate with my friend Alex and had the word “sunshine” on my mind the entire drive to my writing session. I knew I wanted to write a song that encapsulated the feeling of cruising with your windows down on a chill sunny day. A day where the blue skies and fluffy white clouds are endless. I had been feeling bummed out by the grey days, and it was one of my first few in-person sessions back after being cooped up so long. Although “Sunshine” is not entirely about 2020, there are definitely some feelings in the song about that year and my move across the country.

The song came together so easily. There are some writing sessions where you spend a while finding that perfect clever rhyme, but with “Sunshine,” I just started saying exactly what I was wishing for in that moment over an electric guitar.

”Looking for some sunshine…”

We wrote the song in a couple hours and started laying out the vocals. I wanted stacks of vocals, harmonies, backgrounds, everything to give it that dreamy feel. I walked out of that session with a mostly done vocal over an electric guitar and felt we had something special.

Production took us a second to figure out. We went more electronic/dance for a moment, but it didn’t feel like a fit. Eventually it all came together and thankfully the producer Alex was down to work a couple versions until we found the song’s sound. Through all the changes came one of my favorite parts (besides the birds tucked into the back): the strings at the end of the song. Alex was just playing around with string sounds, and I immediately said “We have to find a spot for that.” It’s the perfect dreamy end.

I hope “Sunshine” can bring some light to the gloomy days for you. I can’t wait to share my music video with you all as well, which was filmed in my living room since it was 97 degrees Fahrenheit in Nashville. So much for an outdoor concept, but I think I’m even more happy with where we took it!

Thanks for listening ☀️
